The Black Forest Cake

Germany has been known as one of the leading innovators in the world. It gave birth to printing press, aspirin, cars, and even MP3 technology. Aside from these, Germany is also the country that introduced to the world one of the famous cakes ever created.

A chocolate cake with whipped cream and cherries in every layer and then topped with even more whipped cream and shavings of chocolate is what a Black Forest is all about. It is a favorite choice of cake in various parties or gatherings such as birthdays, weddings and others and I'm sure you've already tasted this delicious Black Forest Cake.

This chocolate cake originated in the black forest region of Germany. Bakers from Germany created a dessert called as "Schwarzw?lder Kirschtorte". The name Schwarzw?lder is a tourist destination in Germany and famous for its abundant cherry trees, which is believed to be the inspiration for the cake.

There are various versions of the origins of this cake. One of the most popular versions of the cake history is that it is said to be invented by a confectioner Josef Keller in 1915 when he made the black forest cherry. However, it was not until 1930 that the recipe of the cake was first published.

A typical Black Forest Cake is consisted of numerous layers of chocolate cake with cherries and whipped cream in every layer. In traditional this cake, a colorless fruit brandy called as Kirschwasser (kirsch) is used. However, at present, this cake is made with different types of liquors like for instance rum, as a substitute for kirsch. There are also some Black Forest Cakes that are made with no alcohol at all.
